LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy π³οΈβπ
You might think all therapists are open and supportive to people from various backgrounds and identities; however, even therapists are people and hold biases and judgments toward minorities. That is why itβs important to individuals who identify within the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and any subset of these identities) to find a therapist who is not only competent on the unique issues they face, but has specialized training and experience.
People in the LGBTQ+ community are at a higher risk of mental and physical problems due to homophobia and transphobia, even in healthcare settings. They also have unique experiences the general population do not face, such as coming out to friends and family or gender dysphoria, and that not all therapists are trained in understanding or treating. Having a therapist who provides LGBTQ+ affirming services is vital as it provides a safe space for people who are LGBTQ+ to explore and process their unique needs without fear of prejudice.
While therapy may still look the same, one of the most important aspects of LGBTQ+ affirming therapy is that the individual can trust and find safety with their therapist without fear of receiving a lower level of care because of their identity. They can also have confidence in knowing that their therapist has a unique understanding of how LGBTQ+ issues can affect other stressors such as work, relationships, and romance.
Here are a number of unique issues that people in the LGBTQ+ community face:
Homophobia (both externalized and internalized)
Transphobia (both externalized and internalized)
Higher rates of sexually transmitted nfections (STIs)
Higher rates of substance use
Higher rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors
Coming out to family and friends
Difficult family dynamics due to religion, politics, and other cultural factors
Higher rates of obesity and eating disorders
Higher rates of certain types of cancer
Higher rates of heart disease and other physical issues
